Salomón Huerta, Untitled Figure, 2000. Oil on canvas on panel. Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

I realize this painting may look simplistic or unexciting, but when I looked at it for more than a moment something about it really struck me. I love the repeated, parallel curves in the painting (of the man’s butt, the top of the chair, his shoulders, the top of his head), which lend a fullness & structure to the otherwise empty frame. There are also the thin, sharper lines of the chair legs, and how succinct the space is that the man and his chair occupy. I love the contrasting colors — the shocking pink of the man’s shirt and the richness of his skin with the odd green background and the gray of the chair. Although the man is faceless and he and the chair have no context in space, thereby making the painting difficult to enter or relate to, something about the shadow on the back of the chair and the way the man’s body looks as he sits makes me feel close to him, almost as though I know him and he is about to stand up and face me. I feel at once comforted by him and protective of him. I feel like there is a lot of dialogue, a lot of push and pull going on in this painting.

For some reason, it makes me think of Forest Gump. Just doesn’t do it for me.

I like this idea, though! Will be checking back for more.

I saw things through your eyes and words that I would have otherwise missed. Thank you.
